I have been watching various people performing the angle punch in Joong gun and also the twin side elbow thrust in Toi Gye and have a question about the foot motion back to the closed stance.

When I was learning this I always brought the foot back to closed stance as I turned into the technique making sure that it all ended as once. Having watch a few people now though it looks like the more advanced way to perform this correctly it to perform the 90 degree turn almost at the start of the move and then to perform the action back to the closed stance keeping the hips in the same direction.

Any help would be great!

p.s. I know i could ask at class but thought this section of the forum looked a bit lonely with the last post being over a year ago!

To quote the encyclopaedia:

"Bring the left foot to the right foot, forming a close stance toward A while executing an angle punch with the right fist. Perform in slow motion."

It seems pretty clear to me, and as far as I am aware it is always taught this way. If you turn then punch, there is no waist twist, sine wave or momentum to the technique, therefore no power at the end.

That's two technique posts this year now...!

Hi Dan
I Have always been told that everything happens together: feet, waist, hands etc. This is also how I teach it. Think of it in thIs way, would you do a pressing block in low stance by doing the stance first and then the block? Hope this helps.

It is more to do with the turn rather than the feet and punch. i.e. does the turn happen then the feet come in at the same time as the punch or does it all happen at once. Its just that I have seen some senior grades do it differently to how I have always though it was performed and therefore was just checking it wasn't one of the moves that develops and your TKD develops.

Mr A has cleared it up for my though!

Thanks everyone for your comments.
